Darkness returns to Antarctica for the first time on 12th January. As I arrived, a week after this, a slither of darkness could be found in the small hours. With so much light, late night walks around the point were a fantastic privilege. The approach of darkness was speedy in taking back time, the end of civil twilight marking a curfew to return to base.

The gift from the setting sun was fabulous sunsets, pink tinged early mornings and stars!

One chilly night, we braved the wind to capture the southern lights dancing. The cloud cover was fairly thick, occasionally parting to tease dancing lights.

As the night overtook the day, sunrise and sunset stretched over hours. Once the light came it was often that intense alpine brilliance which showed off the white surrounds.
