Adorable Adelies

The Adelies never fail to amuse. Their clumsy movements and attempts at standoffish behaviour are instantly loveable.

Around February, they stay ashore to malt. They malt on snow so they have access to water. At Rothera this means they are often gathered together as the snow has retreated. They never looked happy about it!

One party trick of the Adelies is the ability to trap air bubbles in their feathers which they can use to squeeze to get a jet propulsion onto land or icebergs.

As they move through the water, they have a dolphin-esque formation, frequently jumping above the water and diving back under.
